I retrieved various macroeconomic indicators and their related historical data from Tilastokeskus (stat.fi) API. This data has been cleaned and merged to provide the reader with a quick, intuitive overview through visualized data.
It includes the following workflow steps:
- Identifying and selecting relevant macroeconomic datasets from official API endpoints.
- Connecting to the API and importing raw data into Power BI using Power Query (JSON format).
- Converting raw JSON structures into optimized data formats for analysis.
- Ensuring accuracy and consistency in the imported values.
- Designing the schema and establishing relationships between tables to ensure seamless cross-filtering and analysis.
- Advanced cleaning to handle potential duplicates, null values, or data gaps.
- Developing custom DAX measures and calculated columns
- Building a clean, intuitive visualization to provide a quick overview of complex economic trends.
A streamlined, automated reporting solution that transforms raw government API data into a clear, visual narrative of historical economic development.
Two concrete key insights:
- The unemployment rate among young people (aged 15–24) has remained very high throughout the entire observation period (2013–2025)
- Both the demographic and economic dependency ratios have been on a steady rise throughout the entire observation period (2013–2024)
You can watch the video below, where I demonstrate the visualization (in Finnish, 16 min).
